Dogs and Nudes
The series Self-portraits
with Napoleon consists of
romantic and staged images of me, nude, with my dog. They are painted in watercolor
on paper in a realistic style.
The paintings make light of the sexualizing position
of the viewer through the potentially taboo interaction between a reclining
female nude and a lap dog.
Sometimes Napoleon confronts the viewer. At other
times he looks at me, and becomes the viewer. Laura Sue Phillips, New York City, 2006
